Birth of The BERP
Mario Guarneri, inventor of the BERP
The creation of the BERP grew out of the concept of mouthpiece buzzing which has been used for many years as a teaching technique for brass players. One of the greatest proponents of buzzing the mouthpiece was James Stamp. I studied with Jimmy while a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and his teachings have influenced the exercises and practice suggestions that make up the BERP concept. He asked his students to add some resistance to the mouthpiece when buzzing and often asked us to finger the notes of the pitches we were buzzing. I thought that putting those two concepts together would be the most efficient way to benefit from buzzing.
In late 1985, I asked Bob Reeves to make some prototypes to enable me to buzz on the mouthpiece while holding the horn. My students and I became the guinea pigs and our progress became dramatic when using the BERP for mouthpiece buzzing. I then designed BERPs for my professional colleagues who played horn, trombone and tuba, and they enjoyed the same results. I realized that not only trumpet players, but all brass instrumentalists could benefit from BERPing.
In February of 1986 the BERP company became a reality. The acronym B.E.R.P. came out of the first company meeting, a late night session with all the words that had something to do with the product listed in front of me. The Buzz Extension and Resistance Piece became the BERP, a name that would bring a smile, along with other benefits, to lips all over the world.
It's now about 50,000 BERPs later and the Ultimate BERP has evolved. Perhaps you are already part of our history. If not, I invite you to try this simple, but extremely efficient learning tool and make it part of your daily routine. BERPing on a regular basis will make you a better brass player--guaranteed!
